I discovered my love of painting and meditation at the same time. I learned to be in the space of quiet and peace while simultaneously exploring the flow of creativity from somewhere deep inside of me onto the canvas. The two are now inseparable for me. My most recent collection is a study in color theory. Yet the finished works remind me of the journeys and paths we each choose in our short existence. Some with many turns, others easily measured and carefully planned.

I did not follow the straight path to becoming an artist, spending most of my adult life as a professional chef. While culinary school was alive with exploration and discovery, the work of a chef was not.

My fortieth year on the planet changed everything. From calligraphy to watercolor to acrylic, I embraced the artist within me and a completely new world opened up. And while I focus mainly on acrylic abstract painting, I love that being an artist means I can play in any medium and know that it is building my practice and deepening my work.

The poetry book and self portrait series I did in 2021 led me to spend more time contemplating my work. It connected with the emotions that come out of me when I am painting, and those that are reflected from the work.

My practice is focused on exploration and discovery, with color being at the center. I am curious about the range a single tone can stretch and how it expands as it is mixed with other colors in the spectrum. The delight of finding greens while mixing turquoise and orange, the search for a particular grey from yellow. I am part scientist, part kindergartener in the studio. And then I am molding them into forms, adjusting the contrast, shifting the composition, forming lines that dance around the canvas.

I am endlessly fascinated that this form of play can bring forth so much energy, insight, and connection. For me, the beauty of abstract work is that it takes us to a realm beyond words. You and I could stand in front of the same work for hours and see completely different things and yet the work still connects us. And so, my intention is to make work that I feel a deep connection with so that I can connect more deeply with others.

My work brings me a sense of clarity and peace, not because the works are always serene and calming, but because the release of those emotions held deeply and firmly for so long allows only stillness to remain.
